History of Tablet Weaving

Card weaving, or tablet weaving as it is known in Europe, has been around since ancient times. Archeological sites have yielded examples of fabrics as well as bands complete with threaded tablets. Even without the tablets, the twined warp threads are indicative of this type of weaving. Early tablets were made of a variety of materials, including wood, ivory, and leather. While the craft never died out, interest in it was rekindled in the late 1800s. For a more detailed history read Peter Collingwood’s The Techniques of Tablet Weaving.
